Hello from Heysham

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm Tom Dullage, I'm an Operations Engineer at Heysham 2 Power Station in Lancashire, about to retire and hopefully have time to improve my photography.

I'm currently using Nikon D3200 & D5200 cameras and Sigma 18-250 & 150-500 zoom lenses, mostly for wildlife pictures. Being 5 minutes walk from Half Moon Bay, part of Morecambe Bay, I also get to see some wonderful sunsets, which I hope to do justice to with the camera one day!

I'm just contemplating buying a 300 mm prime lens, but wonder if I really need it! I have looked at the Sigma 300 F2.8, and the Nikon 300 F4 & F2.8 lenses. If money was no object, I would rush out and buy the Nikon F2.8, but the Sigma may be a good compromise. The Nikon F4 gets some great reviews, but will it do anything that my current Sigma 150-500 doesn't? Food for thought!

Anyway, this post was supposed to be a hello, so I'll stop wittering, Hello from Heysham!!

Hi Tom, and Welcome. It's a lovely friendly place on here.
I use a D3200 and love it.
I bought a 50-300mm Nikkor lens earlier this year and find it's a very good all round lens. I also bought a 35mm f1.8 which I have had a lot of use out of so far, and am glad I settled for that and not a really long prime.

By the way, keep whittering and then you will definitely be in the right place

Welcome to the forums  Tom, from someone brought up so on the edge of Liverpool (a veritable 'woollyback') that I almost count as a Lancastrian. Well, they are the nearest I have to any interest whatever in a county cricket side

Having said that, I'm firmly on the side of the Yorkists in the Wars of the Roses, rather than those utterly appalling Tudors - though to be fair, they were Welsh not Lancs really. Now I'M wittering!

Hi Tom and welcome to the forum, I've only been here a couple of days and found everyone to be really friendly and full of great constructive advice.

I have recently upgraded from a D3100 I loved it but I was limited with it. I have a D7100 now and I am just getting to grips with it. I use the original kit lens from my D3100 (18-55mm) and a 55-300 Nikkor zoom lens...not the greatest glass in the world by any means but I am very pleased with the results I get from them both.

Welcome aboard.

Gear? The advantage of the Sigma f2.8 would be the ability to use a 1.4 and 2x converter to get the length back up while giving the extra light gathering when used without. Great for when the light drops or when you want to get extra separation from the background from the shallower depth of field a 2.8 will give you.
