Millhouse Birsay, Orkney

Recommended Posts

After cancelling in 2020 due to Covid 19, we finally made it to Scotland where I have a lot of ancestry, especially in Orkney where we are currently staying. These are some photos I took of the millhouse in Birsay where my mother's family lived in 1780. The mill is still in operation milling ancient barley grown locally. These were given minimum post processing on my laptop so could probably be improved.

Great that you have managed to get to Scotland after the postponement following the Covid pandemic .. I hope you are loving  both the Family History adventure and the photographic opportunities that Scotland offers. The  first image is classically beautiful  and reminds me of the way Dutch Painter Vermeer  used  light from a window in so many of his famous paintings like The Milkmaid ...  There is a sense of mystery in the shadows and the  object on the windowsill  plays an important part of the composition  in my opinion ... On a whimsical note there appears to be a smiley face  showing through the centre window pane ...😉

Thanks everyone! It is so interesting to taking photographs in Scotland which is so different to Australia in the subject matter, but also in the quality of the light, I think. There is light in Orkney but it is more diffused and cooler perhaps.
