Swallowtail caterpillar before and after

Recommended Posts

This is one of the caterpillars living on my citrus tree. To practice using my new macro gear, I cut off a couple of the branches, put them in a jar of water in my bath. They started on the living room table but they made too much mess 😬. A week later, it consumed all the best young leaves and doubled in size..... then yesterday it changed its appearance to the grey version in the second photo.

Looks like it's settling into the next larval stage. Are you planning to keep it through to emergence?

Paul.

Yes, I hope to keep it as long as a I can to what happens. The butterflies that laid the eggs are very pretty and I had taken some photos of them a few times over the years - though none good enough to keep. Strangely, I never connected the idea that the pretty butterfly was laying eggs on my tree that would hatch into these caterpillars that would then eat my tree! I learn.
