Pieris radae on everlasting daisy

Apparently Pieris radae was first reported in Australia in 1929.  Like many introduced species, it soon made itself at home. Despite the bad reputation as a pest, they are quite beautiful. this one was feeding on one of Australia's everlasting daisies.

Good question. Certainly a pest in its caterpillar form. Probably a pollinator in its butterfly form.

The ubiquitous cabbage white….  The caterpillars will decimate the cabbages in your kitchen garden but morph into angelic looking butterflies  ready to lay their eggs and start the whole saga all over again ! Their work as pollinators is their saving grace … it’s all about the balance of nature  … so easily tipped ….
