Some of you may be wondering where the little avatar I have comes from... Some of you may not be wondering that at all...

So, if you are, or if you aren't - then it comes from this photograph of mine of a delightful house spider, the Tegenaria gigantica.

She measured about 1½ inches from front to back, the leg span took her to about 3 inches long. They can bite, but cause n o harm to humans unless you suffer from anaphalctic shock.

One of my favourite macros.

Question...

How the hell do you get that close to a spider? when I gently get near with fingers to scoop one up to evict ( wife scared *hitless ) they seem to bunch up or leg it!

Anything that size would receive a weightlifting lesson with a phone book if the Mrs had her way!

Stealth. When you're after an insect that doesn't need to run all the time (centipedes for example, never seem to stop) - then just being very slow on the approach is what you need to be. And of course, a judicious crop may or may not be involved...

Thaks m8. She's resident in the outhouse, been there a coule of years now. Sometimes I see her near the doorway which is the opportunity for the camera, but as a rule, her web is way back in the top corner out of reach, and she is out of sight.
