Was just taking a couple of pictures of a climber that is in flower when I spotted this - just cropped from the larger picture:

He was very flighty, and I was lucky to get another, from another angle, but still not good enough to identify him:

Thanks all.

 

Definitely not a bee, but I didn't manage to get a picture of him side on - maybe Sawfly type, Paul - I'll check it. He constantly kept his eye on me, and even the shutter click spooked him, and, what's more, he hasn't been back!!

 

Oh, and size-wise his total body length was about an inch long - that gives you an idea. :D
