At a very loose end yesterday so with camera in hand I found a load of Bee's buzzing around our Lavender bushes...
Not having anything like a Macro lens and only having my 250mm lens on the camera at the time, I thought I would give it a go...

Never underestimate the usefulness of a long lens for pseudo macro. Especially for insects, not only can you get to them when they are out of reach, but also they're a lot less likely to fly off.

I prefer the 2nd version.

I agree about the long lens.  I only took my 100mm Macro to Duck End last week and I wished I'd also taken my 70-300mm as most of the dragonflies were out of reach with the 100mm.
