I’m not sure either that the difference of grain and no grain  for the engine works for me either John... ... I do often like the gritty feel often used in monotone  especially  on a subject like this and I can see why  you wanted to make the Engine appear more powerful and impactful.   Maybe the transition between the two could be  feathered more  as it just appears to be too manipulated and unreal . It looks like you’ve used  blur filter too  .. I’d like to see the grain effect but without the blur  and just expose the engine  in a gradual way .

I think I’d like to see it processed again but minus the blur ...  it could be worth the try as I really like the idea ...

What is  the original like .... as the capture of it emerging in from the tunnel  is well thought out ...

Perhaps your right.   I had the idea and captured the original as planned but I had more impact in mind.  I thought that pp would make up the difference but perhaps not .  There were two originals (Lytebox helps as per...):

This was used for the version above.

.  In retrospect, the first one was OTT.

We all try things John don’t we ... we have an idea and try to make it work especially if we spend ages in photoshop attempting to realise our vision ... been there so many times myself ...  I think the effect you sought ... of a power bursting through , you actually achieved with the second image... . . Well for me it really worked .

I had a play too John ... still not convinced that your original is improved by the  motion  blur   so I have  done a selected  radial/ zoom blur  but kept the steam sharp still but  used the neutral density filter  to show  the steam  more ... I'm posting it , not because I think it works  but to show you that I tried  also  to get that impact  you thought you needed ...

It looks like it's revealed  some lights top right ... signals ...?

Thanks Polly.  I think I will have to stick with the original.  Your version makes the surround more prominent than the engine and I think that's been the problem with all the the different versions.  Thanks for trying though.
