A good warning sign.....

Called in on our nearest neighbor for a cuppa, (only 1lkm away), and as I approached her back door this slithered across in front of my feet - good jobs the girls were still in the car!! It went and 'hid' in an old BBQ spot, so couldn't get a very good photo, but you can see it here - guessing almost 5foot long, a Brown snake:

We knew they were about, but this is the first we have seen close to home, a good warning to watch out for them.

Probably the snake is more scared of humans so the chance of a bite is small?

Your are right Kev. The majority of people who do get bitten are stupidly chasing snakes, or come across one awkwardly and unexpectedly. All I did was stand still and it slid away.

I should say that the area around our house is very much safer, more open and clearer sight of the ground, than at this rather 'slack' neighbours place!

I wouldn't mind photographing wild snakes, preferably with a long lens though. Thankfully we only have one venomous snake, the Adder, though recently scientists discovered there are two distinct species of grass snakes in the UK (neither are venomous) bringing the total to 4 native species...
