Nice drama. #1 for me. Paul.
  9. Ta Dee. There were few people there, but I can see the attraction for walkers. Paul.
  10. Thanks Dee. For a small square chunk of stones, it's a popular place. Paul.
  11. There isn't much to see Geoff except little houses and farms, rolling countryside, and serenity, plus a roaring dam with weir! Paul.
  12. Thanks Jeff. I had 2 RTH alerts and several strong wind warnings on this flight. It was a lot windier than the excellent image stabilisation shows here. Paul.
  13. Abbeystead Weir is in the Forest Of Bowland AONB, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A remarkable, large, curved basin like structure allows water to flow from the reservoir down an stone-lined channel to a high weir and into the River Wyre below. The beautifully curved weir we see today was originally constructed in 1878 and finished construction in 1881. The dam was designed by a James Mansergh who after the completion of Abbeystead designed the reservoirs at Elan Valley. Tragically, the quiet village of Abbeystead hit the headlines in 1984 when a disastrous explosion at a pumping station which was being visited by residents from the nearby St Michaels on Wyre. Of those 44 visitors, 16 lost their lives, and many of the others were seriously hurt or burned by escaping methane gas. Today, the village is wonderfully peaceful, with only a commemorative plaque to allude to that terrible day. Abbeystead Disaster (Wiki) Music: Albatross (Fleetwood Mac). Paul.

Thanks Geoff. It was worth the visit, and the snack from the little snack bar was delicious.... Paul

    Glasson Dock

Thank you - it remains great fun (while a bit nervy) flying. I am amazed at the video quality that little plastic drone is capable of! Paul.
  16. Haha, thank you Polly Paul.

    Glasson Dock

Glasson Dock. A popular destination for tourist, many on motorbikes, the village of Glasson has a small selection of shops and places to eat, and there are excellent walks in the surrounding countryside. The harbour at Glasson originally opened in 1787, following the demise of Lancaster as a port, and was at its height the largest port in the north west, importing cotton, sugar, spices and slaves from Africa and the Indies. Glasson is still a thriving port handling over 150,000 tonnes of cargo annually. Glasson Waterside & Marina lies in a secure and well sheltered location at Glasson. Glasson Dock is a useful stopping-off point for yachts on their way from the South Coast to Scotland or vice versa. Within easy reach of the Isle of Man and Ireland, it makes an excellent base for exploring the beautiful countryside of the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. The Basin, which forms the beginning of Lancaster Canal, is entered via a lock from the River Lune. It is in a rural setting but within easy reach of many pubs and restaurants. Music by Enya: "Dreams Are More Precious". Paul.
  19. Not yet, I have looked at them on the map, and have been jotted down for future reference.
  20. Cheers Geoff. Yes, I climbed this one - it's not very high, lol... and the rails were pretty solid. I drove back through the Trough of Bowland on my way to the next location.... Paul.
  21. James Harrison, to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria, did two things. In a fit of patriotism he lit a beacon on nearby Clougha Pike on the date of the Jubilee, and his second deed was rather more enduring - he commissioned a local mason to build a folly view tower. This was built to be a viewing tower, and here is some of what can be seen: Face out to sea and look at the great views of Lancaster close by, with Heysham and its power station beyond. To the right, looking north on a clear day shows the Lake District and it’s southern mountains. Behind is Hare Appletree Fell and a path up to Clougha Pike. The road to the left will take you to the Trough of Bowland, a fantastic drive through this designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Tower is a plain stone structure 3.87 metres square and 4.5 metres high with a stone staircase up to the flat top, which is surrounded by a crenellated wall. There are no doors or windows in the outer walls. Paul.
  22. Shelob of the Shed. She has finally put in her spring appearance. This is one of my resident spiders in the shed, seen here on a rusty old garden spade. Paul.
  23. Wonderful Cheryl. Paul.
