It seems the accepted approach for long exposures is to control the light by using a ND filter. Fine but my question is would I get the same result by adjusting the exposure compensation or would I be missing something?

While I accept that one of the essential components of a window is glass, I am submitting a shot that falls sadly short of this requirement. However, this window is in a ruined priory near Loughborough that received unwelcome attention from the Tudor king. So don't blame me for the lack of glass ..... blame Henry V111. -

A modest little memorial but if you choose to read the words on the plaque, I suggest you keep a pack of Kleenex to hand. Heartbreaking tale which I admit forced a tear or two from my eye. . -

Love this shot but submitting photos of Aussie summer flowers in Brtish midwinter seems a bit like fighting dirty! -

Just discovered Neil Gaiman, am reading American Gods. Pretty strange novel. It's a fantasy but not (so far) in a heavy handed Lord of the Rings/Game of Thrones sort of way. Good read.

I love the Peak District but would definitely have given it a miss yesterday. You deserve an award for confronting the weather! -

That is terrific advice thank you. In the interests of short term marital harmony I will leave the travel tripod for the future. I will take your advice on the Tamron and give some thought to the Canon lens (might involve a letter to Santa). Thanks again.

Thanks Chris, this is really useful. I suppose my usage will be something like 50% landscape. 25% portrait (family etc) 25% miscellaneous, (including wildlife) . A lens for every eventuality is not an option as I'd rather stay married(!) so flexibility is a must. I note your comment about loss of quality but the Tamron 16-300 has some decent reviews so I think I may go for this one. Thanks again.
