Abandoned Building - Abano Terme, Italy

Recommended Posts

I'm living in Northern Italy for the next 5 months so thought I should explore the local area a bit before I go further out.
About 800m from where I'm staying is this old building (I think it is an "edificio abbandonato" in italian)

I don't know what it used to be but the windows are barred up (although these could have been added later) to stop nosey photographers exploring

Its near Abano Terme by the river

If you switch to satellite view, you can see the building itself, I don't think Google planes did many fly-overs of this area judging by the angles on the images

I had a closer look today and it seemed like there was a fire at some point.

Then a local told be that there was a big fire and that it used to be very beautiful (in italian, so I didn't get the cause of the fire)

There's also a mail box, so I guess it used to be a (Very big) house

That must have been a lovely old building and that's an intriguing couple of pictures...

The satellite view shows it to be just walls, so whatever caused the fire, it must have been a big one, but interestingly there seems to be another building in good order on the other side of a yard behind  it (as well as another shell by the road).  Could be an interesting project to find out more of the history.

Looking again at the satellite, to the south of the building is now a field, but street view from via Roveri shows a double-columned gated entrance that surely must have led to the building at one time.

I haven't managed to get in. Its locked and a very popular walking route. I imagine the sunset/sunrises could make for some more interesting photo's yet. And there should be fewer people around.

It has the appearance of an asylum or Hospital, or, perhaps a once stately home turned into one.

Perhaps the best way to discover more is to seek out a friendly local pensioner, for a coffee and an investigative chat?
