cor! bugs, what an absolute smasher of a picture. they are so beautiful and so small. such a shame that the ones in the world of butterflies, Hertfordshire were all wiped out by a virus, the two year ban on them keeping them, to protect the other butterflies should be up soon.

thanks for putting this wonderful shot up bugs xxx

This is beautiful, Bugs.

Did you use any kind of lighting to get his wings to shine like that?

The exif doesn't reckon the flash was used, but at the time I had a non-canon flash so it may not have recorded it, and also the 1/60s exposure does suggest the flash fired. If so, it would have had a few layers of white hankie to soften the flash.

cracking image, I have some pictures of these somewhere :)

Sorry though I'm not into the frames :(

It was a phase I was going through at the time :)

Would it be better if I used an external flash when shooting with my Raynox as I can pull that forward to zoom mode?

I have a nylon material diffuser which I can pull over it.

A top mounted flash will normally (always?) give better results than the on-board flash simply because it's further from the centre line so you get less direct reflected flash, and a diffuser, whether it's a white sock or a professional attachment will always help to soften the light.

Thanks,  Bugs.

I didn't take the flashgun on holiday as I was cutting down as much as I could with having to carry it all in my backpack, but I will start to take it out with me when we are just on one of our days out.
I also have a bracket but then it all becomes heavy and cumbersome.
