Hello Dennis & welcome....from Denis
-
I only have View NX2 that is Nikons own software, ColinB gave me a few good tips to using it but this lightroom thingy sounds quite good. I am afraid of buying it and not understanding how it works, the same as freeware programs like GIMP ect. I for some reason, turn into Mr Cabbage Head when trying to understand processing software!

ANYONE NEAR THIS?.......Looks very interesting
Denis replied to FUJI's topic in General Photographic
That looks very interesting fuji, I might try and get along since it is running for a few months. The simplicity of the photos is outstanding! -
Yes, it must have been a bit of an undertaking on his part!

Hello Steve, Rugged Coastlines?.... rugged scenery?... rugged wildlife?...bring it on ! Oh, and welcome to the forum

It was quite amazing to see the whole lift presented like that. This type of lift on such a large vessel has never been done before, so it was good to see someone got their sums right! Ta for sharing John.

Could it be that the quality of photography seen on here may put people off? Many people on here submit outstanding pieces of work that the more amateur side couldnt hope to compete with. Bear with me on this for a second or so.... My theory is born from my own time looking for an amateur forum site where I could learn a bit about a subject hobby I drifted into. Now I am never going to be a great photographer, I take pictures for my own benefit. More along the lines of snapshots but hoping they are a little better than the average. Occasionaly I post one or two, mostly I keep my efforts to myself. but I do like to see what others are doing and draw some ideas and some knowledge along the way. But then some of you are already established photographers in your own right. Many of you showcase your work every day, and very good it is too! Some post a lot of their really good work prolifically after joining, and it could be that those lurking as guests might think that their efforts might not be up to a standard good enough for the forum. I too have seen other forums where everyone is falling over themselves posting images as if it were a competition. For photography does seem to me to be a very competitive hobby where your latest effort must be posted as quickly as possible to gain adoring praise and adulation, all well and good if you are at that standard...but many of us are not! Perhaps a newcomers sub section for the very amateur poster may wean more to the site, if numbers are what is needed. The very experienced ones here could help with tutorials, advice and suggestions. Personally, I like how things are here, If what I post does not work, a few are happy to put me right, and I learn from that. But there are those out there who are reluctant to post their efforts on a forum for fear of ridicule. Some of those might think that this forum is therefore like the rest..but it aint! TIPF is kind of unique in that quarter. Just my two bobs worth!

It is a great shot, right up my street

Hello Dave & welcome

Ideal for people like me who have only relatively recently got into photography, cheers!

Out of the images I take, like the past weekends 509 shots at the Moth Rally, about 30 were what I considered good enough to show. All the RAW images I shoot go into a 1 TB external drive, solely for the storage of photos. Bugs has hit the nail on the head with his post. I have learned , especially from this site, not to totally ditch anything

So there I was in Woburn Park for the deHavilland Moth Rally. I was volunteering at the event as a helper and after the briefing from the organisers, decided to wander with my camera and new sigma to have a look at the parked aircraft. Wandering in front of me was a 'gentleman' with a huge lens on his Canon, a second camera hung around his neck. He was wearing a reflective vest with the words 'MEDIA PHOTOGRAPHER' emblazoned across the back. As a late arrival was on long finals for landing, I said to this fellow, "being as I have not done any 'aircraft in flight' photos, have you any tips for a relative beginner"? He looked at me and said "Go away and annoy someone else, I'm not in the mood to talk to people like you" Can you guess my reply?

Nikon 50mm f1.4 prime Vs 300mm Sigma f4.5 - but which?
Denis replied to colinb's topic in Equipment and Settings Advice
I would go with that assumption too. 2 is the prime.....it doesnt look like the lens struggled to get the shot. Preparing to get shot down in flames -
Thank you Tina, a stupid question I know, but does the camera have to be set in the Macro position too? I dont seem tonotice a lot of difference...
-
Can someone please enlighten me on the correct use of the macro setting for this lens and camera. I cannot seem to focus in really close to objects and end up a metre away. Am I doing something wrong, or is this the closest I can get because of the focal length?
-
Heh heh! no Fooj, my reply wasnt serious either!...we must be even My boss must have something against me though, he wants me to wave my 10 metre crane mast about in a thunderstorm, thats as bad as your reel of copper wire!

Was in the local PC store looking at printers and I noticed these on sale at £99, a drop from £159! After checking with BP about compatability I rushed back tonight and treated meself to one. All I can say is that it is a lot of lens for the money, still need a printer though...doh! Thanks again for the advice Robin:)

Have I done something to upset you????

In the off chance we will get a storm tonight, what would be the best setting in regard to white balance, aperture and shutter speed with my D3000 using the standard 18-55 lens. I would like to 'prime' it up on the off chance of catching something worthwhile. Or, would my prime f1.8 35mm lens be a better option? I know it is one of the most difficult things to photograph as you get no warning, and from what I have read in the past people spend many hours trying to photograph lightning, but hey ho, willing to at least give it a bash
