That App

Recommended Posts

You know the one, you downloaded it, had a play and never toucj=hed it again but don't want to delete it just in case.

Well Hipstamatic is my 'That App' and I've had it for three or four iPhones now without taking more than a few dozen images - which is a shame.

Its a very simple camera to use except for the fact you can add lenses and film packs to it so the combinations of effects are almost limitless. You can't control the exposure of the processing you just select a combination a shoot.

It has a huge following (iOS only I'm afraid) but I never got it - until recently when I saw some images with a particular combination, which I downloaded yesterday.

So out I went this morning with the dog down the coast and out again with the family to The North Air Museum with a plan - a plan to only shoot with Hipstamatic using the JohnS lens and Claunch72Monochrome film loaded.

Thought I'd group similar images together to make it easier to show a few - now I know its a strong 'look' and a whole post might seem a little OTT but I have had fun looking for shots where I thought the effect would add to the final image.

I quite like Hipstamatic but not used it for a while. I ended up with that many different cameras on the iPhone i eventually got rid and just use the native camera and Snapseed as my main setup. I do love iPhoneography though it is so refreshing to just go over the top and have fun. Really like these shots.

A fantastic set, that really demonstrate what phone cameras and specialist apps can do, the results here remind me very much of ore- colour magazine photographs.

The app also gives similar results to my recent mono creations using the LED Ringlight......the main subject captured within a pool of light, having a natural vignette.

Yes, I remember ore-coloured magazine photos (sepia was the usual term, wasn't it?). There was something .. I don't know what .. different? .. about seeing a large, sharp, metallic plate photo that was brown in all its tones. Ah, those were the days (before my time, of course!)

Ratbag!

Thou takes the Mick out of my iPad Predictive text........it can and does drive me nuts........it honestly seems to have a mind of its own, it can make up its own unique language some if which is suspiciously Chinese looking.......if it does it again whilst posting I will draw attention to it

I types PRE COLOUR ( lower text) it produces......ORE COLOURED........how and why?

BP, sorry, instead of highjacking your thread.

The app, produces mono photographs that remind me of those printed in the pre colour magazines of the 1950s.

Highjack away.

I've been fiddling and I'm sticking with the JohnS lens but I've changed the 'film' to Blackeys Supergrain which is tunes for high contrast and super sharp - I'll post some results once I've been out with it proper.

I have found you can save your combinations and recall them quickly. That will be my challenge over the coming weeks/months as I want a few 'looks' I can call up depending on the subject.

I know I could do it all in Lightroom but there is something about the lack of control and the 'you-get-what-you-get' images form the app I kind of like.

If you have an iPhone I would recommend you have an experiment next time you're bored.
