Seaham Wander

Went for a wander up the coast, I'd not been to Seaham beach and wanted a look at the new sculpture there, 1101, to comemerate the end of the first world war

Then headed home, pausing only to allow the leg of my tripod to disintegrate

think most of it has already been said but no1 for me because i love the details showing in the statue and whole picture has a slightly more sad feel about it, as it should with the content.

also love no 3 beautifully composed and taken

I can't help getting the feeling from #1 that it's Corporal Jones demonstrating how "they don't like it up 'em". Whereas I see a slumped poignancy in #2, as if the soldier has had more than enough; I also like the fact that if you only half look at it, it could be an actual person. Just my thoughts...

The poem on the back reads

"Now adrift in the wake of this glorious slaughter

He'd seen many a soul cleansed in filthy water

Seen godless men reach out for the bible

as lead tore the flesh from both friend and rival

Soon home to the joy and celebration of kin

Drunken slaps on the back in a local inn

But heavy in his pocket lies a small piece of card

and the note written on it will break a mothers heart"
