2 spiders tonight - includes a walnut!

On the old bird table, which is being destroyed soon in favour of a new one, tonight produces 2 spiders close to each other.

The first is a Walnut Orb spider. This is I think a youngster - the mother was far larger last year and may have died by now to be replaced by offspring - and this may be one of them:

The second is a common house spider:

And the third image is a stack of the two images together - the Orb spider is about an inch in front of the house spider, so under normal circumstances, they cannot both be in focus at the same time, and where I have altered the WB to warm it back up to the natural colour of the wood etc...

Perhaps you could put the old bird table up a quiet corner of the garden so the insects can still live on it.

They seem to prefer old wood to new, don't they?

It's in a dangerous condition. It would be safer to dismantle it. It won't take long for the new table to "wear in" as it were.  :)

My bird table is on it's "last legs" too, but the pigeons still seem to be making good use of it.
We have one of those metal feeding stations as well, so they won't starve.

We even turned the swing seat frame into a feeding station, by attaching mesh feeders etc. along the top with those plastic tie cords, but they seem to have gone off that, although the birds still use it to perch on  and the neighboring cats can't get at them on there.
