4 Engines 1 Train

Thanks Dee, this was at a steam gala on the East Lancs Railway and was a timetabled event and the last train of the day at 6pm so was starting to get close to sunset

Think the Colour one needs a bit of processing, just a little too dark in the image, where the colour one does tell a better story

Thanks Steve, it was getting dark, if I remember correctly it was at iso 1000 at f3.5, the problem was brightening the image more was blowing out the area below the water tower even more.

Unusual site seeing 4 engines, the buffet car must have been serving really good cake

With steam it is sometimes hard to pick a favorite  format between color and B&W.  For me I will go for the B&W but the colorful locomotives are nice to see too.

when I lived in the foothills of northern California it was common to see long modern trains with two 5000 horsepower locomotives in front two in the middle and one or two at the rear heading up the mountain. 

most often the rear two were based 14 miles up (East) track at Colfax,they were referred to as the Colfax express, one facing one way the other the opposite. they would go down to Roseville about the same distance to the west, there they would hook up  to the rear of heavy or long trains and help with pushing and braking on the 90 mile trip up to the summit where they would uncouple and return.
