King John's Castle

Recommended Posts

Had another early morning walk yesterday. This time we visited King John's castle in Odiham. This is near the far end of the navigable Basingstoke Canal.

The Castle was built in 1207-1214. Possibly because it was halfway between Windsor and Winchester. It wad used for various means and was at one point captured by the French whom laid siege for 2 weeks and were surprised the garrison was only 13 men.

It has been in ruin since 1605.

In 1792 the Basingstoke canal was built through the southern Bailey.

You cannot get to close to the outer walls as there is temporary fencing in place but you can enter the inside as there is a protected, from falling flint, covering.

What an interesting  place this is Andy  and some unusual views  ... It's history is  talked about on the link below  by a chap who calls himself the Bald explorer ! It appears all that is left is this Keep ... built of rock and flint stone  I would have like to have seen a picture of it in it's entirety Andy  as one doesn't get a sense of it's size ... Hope you don't mind me adding this link ...
