WINDY DAY PORTRAITS

FUJI

Recommended Posts

Returning from a poolside shoot on Tuesday, I chanced upon an aquantance who, like me, doesnt like the barbers.................The windy weather was blowing both of our barnets about.

Knowing that my 2.8-100 Macro lens is a good one for portraits I asked if he would oblige..............he was quite happy to do so, so, in a howling gale and in a little shade from a nearby tree I shot these  two portraits:

Below, are the mono versions, one grittier than the other.........one closely cropped in camera, a portrait method I quite like..........I woud like to know which one you prefer and why.

My subject, will of course, receive a whole set of both colour and mono when he next emails me:

Best viewed LARGE.......Clock on Pica:

Ok, are you ready for this??

I like ...

1. the framing on the second (head & shoulders)

2. the non-grittiness on the first

3. the un-messed-about-with hair on the second - top and top right

4. the remaining hair on the first

5. the ear on the second (the ear on the first looks totally weird, like a milky waterfall  )

Hope that helps - I suspect it doesn't!

Spot on crit Chris..........thank you Nanny........just the feedback I wanted.

I did pull him into the shade on a very bright very windy day.......his left ear and his very white hair ( and left ear) were blown in parts.....I tried to recover that.......I can now return to the original RAW files to have another go.

I must explains too, that he is a professional Father Christmas for a certain large store.........the whitening bleach he uses on his hair and beard are growing out, so his dark grey roots are showing. hence the......messed about look.......noo.......it's as is ;-)

Just prior to Christmas, his hair and beard are silvery white and trimmed into that Hollywood Santa style, you wouldn't think it was the same guy........I have a pic somewhere I will dig it up for further comparison.

Here it is......taken two years ago.

Cheers!

It's the head and shoulders shot that does it for me. What a great subject!

He certainly has the look of a slightly nutty professor, the kind who smells of pipe tobacco and wanders the corridors of academia mumbling to himself about the price of carrots.

Another winner, Fooj, well done.
