Spotted this guy on our neighbour's property. Looks like he is 'newly hatched', and, in the pictures I used to identify him, it is common for them to have a leg raised. We though he was injured, but apparently not, so, maybe, it's a 'Don't you dare come near me!'

I did get  one a bit closer, and.... see the prong near his nose - when I tried to move him, he jumped on my finger and bit me, and drew blood!!!!:

Haven't noticed one of these here before.

WOW! Kobione that new camera IS paying dividends.....these, and your recent flower shots prove that beyond doubt.

These are great shots of what could be taken for an Alien.....thank goodness insects can't grow to our size or larger.......those pincer mandibils do look evil don't they?

Awww, thank you all, but I have to disappoint some of you as these were taken with the TZ - the only thing we had in the car,  - luckily!!

Heather, we think 'newborn' because of his colour, and his 'fresh and shiny' look. John, he was a good 3" long!

Fuji, I did think he had a rather 'alien' looking face. Those mandibles were b.....dy sharp, and I still have the 'tooth marks'  on my hand!

I think these are related to the NZ Weta, but not quite as big - he was certainly much larger than our usual crickets
