Night sky

Recommended Posts

I was on a night run to Southampton the other night, the only area I knew was fairly light free was on the old A33 between Winchester and Basingstoke.

The road is also totally free of traffic after 9:00pm, but when I pulled up at 11:00pm the nearby M3 was closed resulting lots of passing traffic and  me not being able to make use of space!

Taken from the catwalk between cab and trailer and one in front of the truck, is the red star Mars??

Apparently in April Mars rises about 3 hours before sunrise and would be low on the horizon. Venus on the otherhand is very prominent in the sky at the moment.

I must have a go at astro photography myself

Hmmm, so what is the red dot , not dust either on lens or camera sensor, this was visible with the naked eye as just a red star, In lightroom when it was magnified it looks like a normal star only red, shows up as a light source when sharpening and using the Alt tab on masking when adjusting. Very strange.

Mars does appear red in the sky - even with the naked eye but everywhere I've looked says Mars doesn't rise above the horizon until around 3am in April. Apparently there are several red stars that are visible, Betelgeuse in Orion, Aldebaran in Taurus, and Antares in Scorpio.
