I'm leaning towards the large skipper rather than the Essex because the latter tends to have a wider and darker fringe around the trailing edges of the wings, and a less pronounced mid-wing dark area.

(of course I could be totally wrong :) )

p.s. lovely shots

according to my butterflies & moths book it is a large skipper, the larger black marks on the wings compared to the small skipper.

nice clear shots by the way.

Geoff

p.s in the book they are more orange in colour than yellow.

It's hard to tell... I have just been reading up on Skippers... Male Large Skippers have thick black line through centre of fore-wing which this one doesn't appear to have which means it might be a female Large Skipper... anyway it's beautiful shots of what ever it is...  :yes
