Chuffing Cold

Another cold day on the ELR, to be honest it was a no brainer that these would would better in mono, a black steam train against a grey sky with snow....

Leaving Rawtenstall, wide angle using the Tokina 11-20mm, I have to say these low angle wide shots can be a bit hit and miss, the camera was balanced on a wall near the signal box and I went from shooting the shot above with one camera to pressing the shutter on the other without actually seeing what was in the viewscreen, so a lot of guess work on when it might be in frame.

At Ramsbottom, same train as leaving Rawtenstall above, different location, it's great that you can actually beat the train from one place to another..... You do have to be quick and lucky with the traffic - including parking at Ramsbottom.

Very nice set!  The wide angle, low shot and the smoke trail in #3 give a great impression of speed. Even if it wasn't going particularly fast.

Thanks Brian, I think on only 2 and 3 was the train moving, and the trains never go fast but the cold weather does help.

#3 works very well for me: no FG or BG distractions and the low angle gives a sense of dynamics (an arty-farty word, but I couldn't think of anything else!).

Good set, -- But Im going to buck the trend, for me the full on power of No.2 does it for me, I love the full frame impact, its almost deafening??
