Wavelength

Yesterday I was playing about with  some IR film, here's a first look at one example.

The same view (looking south-ish from Combe Gibbet) at three different wavelengths. 

Green:
 

Red:
 

and IR:
 

All taken with the same camera and lens (Bronica ETRS + 40mm). The first 2 are on Ilford Pan-F50+, and the IR is on Rollei IR 400, all colour filtering done in hardware.

P.S. Yes I know I've not done the best job of cleaning the dust off.

Without question (for me anyway) the IR captured the most detail.

I've considered giving film a go but I'm really not sure where to start.

Although sunny it was quite hazy, and generally longer wavelengths penetrate haze better.  There could also be a factor from the choice of developer, as I did the PAN-F+ in ID-11 which is a fine-grain developer thhas rather lower acutance, while the IR film was done in Rodinal which is a high-acutance developer but results in stronger grain.

Depend a lot on what you are used to. I initially came back to film by resurrecting my old 35-mm SLR that had been languishing for a decade (with a half-shot film still in it).

IR for me an' all - I really like that lens flare!

But I'd never give up digi to return to film - I can see why it has its fans (and the old film cameras are gorgeous) but far too much faff for me these days.

Always interesting to see your film experiments.... I used to enjoy developing and printing my own B/W film when I had access to a darkroom and equipment at Art College. There is an arts centre local to me that twice a week does B/W film developing/printing evenings, you just pay for the paper and a nominal fee for equipment use.

The IR definitely delivers more detail. Looking forward to seeing more shots from your setup James.
