Lowkey

These don't work for me, Rye, they really don't. I can't but wonder if they are the proper subject for such a low-key treatment.

Sorry to be so negative on these, but they just aren't rattling my pots an' pans.

It'll be interesting to see what others have to say!

Thanks for the comments everyone, both positive and negative, it was just a little experiment and obviously comes down to personal taste as to whether you like or dislike an image..

The first image is of a tractor and the second is part of a diesel train. I used a plugin called Virtual Photographer and tweaked a B/W Preset called Art Class.

I can see what you were getting at Rye, but you seem to have put your foot on the processing accelerator instead of pushing a little at a time on layers, this would have given you a much wider range of tones and textures.  A bit like this, but much darker..

I must admit to liking the robot-like first one.

Thanks FUJI, my initial idea for these images was to reduce the colour depth down to 2 colours, except it didn't really work as everything got very blocky. So the next step was to try and reduce the range of tones to the least possible whilst still preserving an interesting abstract image.
