These shots were taken at The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust in Gloucestershire.

 

If you look at the eye in the first shot you will see the eye is partially cover with a sort of  semi transparent membrane, I've no idea why as it is in addition to the normal eyelid. I've tried to find out what this is without success, I will try and ask when I next go to Slimbridge.

Hi John,

I've just asked a bird owning friend of mine and he says' that it is a Nictitating Membrane.

He is an expert so I thought he would know.

I didn't know so many creatures had this eyelid, I knew I'd seen similar on lizards.

It's interesting to find these things out, isn't it? I intended to Google it too, but got waylaid when my granddaughter came online to chat.

It would be interesting to read up on it.

what a beautiful bird...those eyes are quite something....i have a pic of a crowned crane i took at a zoo....but it does not have eyes like that....

 

 

(my eyes look like that after a night on the spiced rum!)
