I will let you in to my secret, in this case...

since acquiring NIK EFEX I have learned and perfected a few tricks, one I learned by studying the work of another user...

Usually, prior to converting to mono, it is more effective to increase the brightness, contrast and saturation of the original colour shot, saved separately as ...enhanced....

But, instead of faffing about on layers.....try this.....Go to NIK EFEX HDR .....use that to enhance your original colour version, choose the brightest, clearest pre-set, then fiddle with the construction and other sliders until happy.

Only then, I convert to mono, choose the nearest pre-set .....I usually choose....High Structure .....harsh....but there others you may like better......that done, flatten the layers, to add your final sharpen, using the ...High-Pass....Filter.

Have a go, to see how you progress.
