Christmas Fun!

I know we have our 'bah, humbug' members that sneer and roll their eyes, so this will apply to all.

What does Christmas mean to you?

Post images that depict your perfect Christmas, post any Christmas related images, pull it to pieces, sing its praises, love it, hate it, tell us why. Banter time!

Without posting a picture, I will kick off.....

The sheer commercialism of Christmas and all of our traditional festivals is threatening the very meaning of each one.......for example, even our town Christmas Tree is surrounded by tatty plastic banners bleating about sponsors, the light which used to be put up by local people are now cheap led clip on to lamp posts, all the same purple/ blue colour......the shops have been groaning with Christmas stuff for two months now.....

yep! I'm an old fogey, who can recall, Christmasses when local shops supplied all that was required, trees were obtained from farmers, and kids were happy with whatever was available .........

The REAL message of Christmas is rapidly being ousted to the gods of commerce.........

'HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE.

Whilst I agree with everything Fooj has said I don't allow that to affect my Christmas, it is what you make it, old fashioned values will win over every time.
I love it, always have and always will. I'm not a particularly religious person but I do have faith, I've yet to pluck up the courage to attend midnight mass but it is on my bucket list... Not likely to be this year though, the family are having a get together at the village pub Christmas Eve so I probably won't be in a fit state :santa:

I'm still thinking about this as I don't  get 'Christmassy' until Christmas Eve.

However ..... I would love to know if the Steampunks have Christmas events - I can imagine some super inventions :smiling:

I am quite sure they do but as we are neither religious or commercialmus we dont bother with it

Apart from rubbish television it is just another day

This will be my first Christmas since I was 16 that I won't be working every day up to and immediately after so quite looking forward to a proper festive time.

The boys are getting older, Dylan doesn't believe anymore and Thomas is only saying he does in case he gets now't. This shot from a couple of years back reminds me of the real magic that Santa and Christmas brings to kids...

Christmas for me is the most amazing, precious, special time of the year. We do family things that we never have/make time for any other time. Games, chat, reminiscent of times, people gone by. Toast those no longer with us. Share a thought for those less fortunate. A time to appreciate what we have and not worry about what we don't. Real tree. No tat.

We are sharing our house with 3 friends from Mexico who are visiting over Christmas They haven't seen snow or felt the cold like we have. Hanging a stocking on a chimney breast will be new to them.I'm planning on taking them to a pantomime (oh yes we are).

We will drink and eat to much. Shed some tears. Laugh at funny gifts but for me its about sharing, family and friendship. Photo to follow..cant find the one I wanted to post but here's me a couple of years ago.....then the late Bonny Bunny...bless her xx

A Chorley Christmas - 2014

The kids are up by four o’clock

All set to roll, all set to rock

Santa’s been then gone away

Oh soddin’ hell it’s Christmas Day

By nine there’s empties in the bin

The wife’s flaked out, she’s hit the gin

As presents go, well mine’s a hoot

It’s socks again, they’ll match my suit

It’s turkey time, big legs an’ wings

Then flatulence that dinner brings

Two-quid crackers, stupid hats

Next door neighbours p*ssed as rats

Piles of dishes in the sink

An’ Uncle Charlie worse for drink

At five, more turkey served with chips

An’ thick-sliced bread an’ cheapo dips

Then Twiglets, crisps and bacon blobs

An’ get more lagers down yer gobs

We bump the music nice an’ loud

We’re starting to attract a crowd

Here’s Hairy Bob from down the pub

He’s heard about the booze an’ grub

He’s brought some weed, just half an ounce

That’s sure to make the party bounce

Eight o’clock, Bob gives it large

The tunes are bangin’, he’s in charge

We do the beers we do the smokes

We’re having’ fun like blokey blokes

It’s feeling good to be alive

But spot-on ten….. the police arrive

Arrests are made, the party’s trashed

But no-one cares, we’re all too smashed

The wife’s in tears, the kids are sick

As me an’ Bob go down the nick

It’s then I wish in fear an’ rage…..

That I could act my bloody age!

—————————————

Yes, Christmas Day’s a day of joy

A day I’ve loved, both man an’ boy

A day that I hold sweet an’ dear……

Yeah! Right!

Love that Korky......now a comparison from memory.....

Christmas 1943

Christmas 1943

three brothers

then there's me

its wartime so

No dad, no  Christmas tree

mum wipes her eyes

Wet with tears

Dad's been gone now

for three years

A holly branch

stands in a pot

thats our tree

you see

paper chains

All made in haste

we'd made a mess

with flour paste

newspaper hats

A scrap of pork

or was it beef

hard to tell

it was so tough

Each had hung

his sock in hope

I recall

with great clarity

A sixpence, an apple

and another pair of boots

from a local charity

We did have

carol singers at the door

.............kids like us

snotty nosed and poor

making the best

of what we had

not much  at all

no tree no dad

that was how it was you see

Christmas nineteen forty three.

All very very true...........I know.......I was there.

  • 2 years later...

Having a root and a toot around the forum, I rediscovered this thread from Christmas 2015. Thought it deserved a BUMP!

It contains a few heart-warming photos, a daft poem from me, a poignant verse from Fooj and a photograph from our late friend Paul Silk.

All are still relevant, so have a sken and enjoy!

And add something new if ya fancy!
