Thanks Chris, this is really useful. I suppose my usage will be something like 50% landscape. 25% portrait (family etc) 25% miscellaneous, (including wildlife) . A lens for every eventuality is not an option as I'd rather stay married(!) so flexibility is a must. I note your comment about loss of quality but the Tamron 16-300 has some decent reviews so I think I may go for this one. Thanks again.

When I bought my Canon EOS 750D in July I decided I would not buy any additional equipment until I had made some progress in learning to use it. I am making some progress and am feeling the need for an additional lens. I am looking for something as flexible as possible, within the constraints of a budget of £400 - £500. I have narrowed my options down to two: a Tamron 16-300 mm or a Sigma 17-70mm. On the face of it, the Sigma doesn't seem to offer a great deal more than my 18-55 mm kit lens but it comes highly recommended. I really haven't much of a clue. Any suggestions?

I understand that it is my responsibility to choose the theme for the next weekly challenge. My choice is Industry. This is intended to be in its broadest sense and can be anything work related, possibly historical or maybe agricultural. Should be plenty to go at. As a starter (and I don't know if I am allowed to enter) I am attaching a photo of the remains of the structure at the top of a long abandoned mine.

Hi everyone. Been interested in photography for a few years, largely with my compact, hiding nervously behind the auto settings and deluding myself that as long as you got your composition right, nothing else really mattered. Then about two years ago I bought a slightly more sophisticated compact (Lumix TZ260) and decided I really ought to find out what all this aperture/shutter/ISO malarkey was all about and forced myself into the uncharted realms of the manual modes. This very quickly exposed the chronic limitations of my camera so in July I bit the financial bullet and bought a Canon DSLR (EOS 750D) and now feel that I am beginning to make some progress. Feel slightly intimidated by the quality of some of the work on the forum and feel rather out of my league but hopefully , (with constructive criticism from you all) I might, one day get into the fourth division! I look forward to being an active member of the forum. I am uploading a picture taken from Hewenden Viaduct in West Yorkshire, taken at sunrise and showing the shadow of the viaduct on the hillside. Hope someone likes it but if not maybe some of you could let me know what I could have done to improve it.
