  1. Yes, I think for your everyday person they wouldn't know that by posting images to Facebook or any other social media network would actually be considered commericial use and that by using their services you not only agree to letting them use any image you upload for any commercial purpose, you also at the same time confirm you have the right to upload. So they wouldn't be going after Facebook or whoever for copyright infringement but to the author.
  2. Sounds good, seems we have a tie-break situation with the latest Weekly Challenge...
  3. It's quite a worring development, that something could be changed so radically.
  4. Just wondering how you go about exposing for high contrast birds that are black/white? I always have trouble with them, black-headed gulls, Shellducks, Avocets etc etc Either the darks are too dark or the whites blown. I know it's easier to recover details from dark areas more than whites in PP, but what about catching it in camera? Sorry if it's been asked before, for landscapes I'd think of bracketed shots and a HDR merge, but that's not going to work with birds/sunjects that are moving about - or would it???
  5. Just wondering what happens in the event on a tie in the voting for the Weekly Challenge?
  6. This has cropped up a few times recently - in a local newspaper and more recently on Wikipedia. The UK and many other countries in the EU (though not all) has this as part of copyright laws, which allows anyone to publish photographs, documentary films and other works depicting public places (building and artworks) without restriction, including commercially without needing the consent of the copyright holder. Julia Reda, published a report on EU copyright rules with an aim to standardising them across all EU member states. Two of the things she wanted was : Freedom of Panorama should become a rule in the entire European Union Calls on the EU legislator to ensure that the use of photographs, video footage or other images of works which are permanently located in public places is permitted; In an ammendment which was voted on and passed on 16th June, it was changed to: Considers that the commercial use of photographs, video footage or other images of works which are permanently located in physical public places should always be subject to prior authorisation from the authors or any proxy acting for them; Now, you might think that if you don't sell those images it won't affect you. However, let's say you went to London, took a picture of the London Eye and posted it on Facebook or some other social network. I've checked the TOS for Facebook, Twitter and Flickr (which is run by Yahoo) and by using their services you agree to give them a non-exclusive license to publish, reproduce, sub-license anything you upload for any use including commercial use. There's also a sub-clause which states that you confirm you have the rights to the image (and any consent needed). At the moment this is not legislation, though there is another vote on July 9th. Anyway a couple of links, first is the blog of Julia Reda: https://juliareda.eu/2015/06/fop-under-threat/ You can write to your MEPS using Writetothem website: https://www.writetothem.com/ There's also a petition on Change.org https://www.change.org/p/european-parliament-save-the-freedom-of-photography-savefop-europarl-en
  7. Congrats from me also a great shot of a magnificent bird in flight.
  8. This Item of Clothing one is really challenging me, so I've got my serious photo-thinking head on at the moment... It's not helping, I'm wondering if more wine will help or not???
  9. Welcome from me also, a confirmred dog lover, but a recent convert to cats. Great photo's, and as a fairly new member myself I can confirm this is a very friendly forum.
  10. Thanks everyone, much appreciated.
  11. I know the Springwatch cameramen/presenters get asked about this all the time, usually their answer is don't intervene.
  12. Thanks guys, there was a touch of moral dilemma in this set, whether I should have tried to intervene, my initial instinct was I should, but everything needs to eat. The Herring Gull is a red-listed species, but it will prey on young Black Headed Gull chicks. It was a hard scene to watch and look back on, I really did feel sorrow for the duckings.
  13. Congrats Geoff, well desrved win and a great shot of a fox cub.
  14. Cog/Gear Wheels from an Old Sluice Gate at Barnard Castle - 16/06/2015
  15. I arrived home after my short week trip to Berwick to find that I got a Kodak Portrait Hawkeye No2 ...made in the 1920-30's, no idea if it still works or even if you can still get film for it. So having Googled it, it's made from cardbooard with a leatherette lining, has two viewfinders, and 2 apertures. It's fixed focal length with a focusing distance of 8ft, or 3ft in the other aperture. There were also a bunch of B/W family photo's - presumably taken on the very same camera.
  16. Vongrats Paul, an excellent shot.
  17. It was indeed a duckling, not sure what kind. I had series of about 18 shots covering from when it snatched it to it finally swallowing it, it last maybe 15-20 seconds. I'm just going through the Puffin shots.
  18. The not so fluffy side of nature, taken at Seahouses about 30 mins before I went to meet up with Chrissy and Geoff. If you're a bit squeamish you might want to look away now...
  19. Yes, it was great to meet you both, and a great day out on the Farne Islands.
