  1. Why was that … was it the size ?
  2. Thanks Fogey … it was just a transient moment that ensured that at least all the effort and energy used to grow over the six months since they had been planted last October was not in vain ! Another case of anthropomorphism eh . It seemed to be such a waste not to record them in some form at least !
  3. I grew some rather unusual tulips this year from bulbs that I bought from Holland and they were called Princess Irene, a Parrot variety . On the very day that they opened up in full bloom in May, we had the most torrential rain for less than 10 minutes but to my horror it knocked the petals off every one of the 60 bulbs I had grown... except one ! So ... here is an iphone image of that one flower that was fully intact ! I was so cross that these beautiful petals were just not going to be seen by anyone that I collected the best ones off the ground and arranged them as a collage on a wooden board and here is the result ... They look as if they are painted petals and I think they are just beautiful ....
  4. Maybe you have just got intelligent blackbirds in the north west ... I notice it was a female .... of course!
  5. I don't think wearing a hard hat would have been any help in these circumstances so I maybe should have bought a lottery ticket that weekend !
  6. It missed t he arbour by inches taking out two huge laurels and an acer
  7. Next day we started the clear up ... three chainsaws were operating between 8 of us ... !
  8. The first pic taken a few hours before the storm the second was the scene that met me when I went to investigate after the hailstones had stopped !
  9. All the following photos were snapped on my iphone so quality is not the best but it records the bough that came down in a storm ten days ago and shows the damage and how it missed the garden arbour and seat by inches . I was stood by the corner where the garden fence rail has been smashed just minutes prior to this happening ... it is a sobering thought that I missed being killed by about 7 minutes ! The first pic was taken in March this year, from a bedroom window . The bough outlined ( covered in mistletoe )is the one that came down ... it didn't actually snap ; it tore off so there was no resounding snap .Hubby was watching from the window and saw it come down just minutes after I had dashed indoors absolutley soaked after retrieving my secateurs and trug from the arbour where I had been gardening most of the day ... After the storm
  10. Missed this somehow .... very retro and works well in mono ...
  11. Sadly they live up to their name ....Day Lilies.... even though they are beautiful ....they only last a day !!
  12. I have never heard of a steam tram before ... did they travel on railways or roads as well ...What's the difference between a train and a tram on the railway ?
  13. That's an amazing shot Mik .... You have captured some fine details on that ... even though it feels you were intruding ....lol
  14. Shows up well against that dark background Mik.... Some super detail too.
  15. Never seen that before ... Well caught Rye ... Interesting how these abilities evolve when habitat and circumstances dictate ... adapting to changing environments are essential for some species to survive in the future ...
  16. Hopefully you will show us some pictures of them ......
  17. Scary stuff when trees fall in a storm .... I know the feeling having had a massive bough fall off a tree that was over 100 foot tall at the end of our garden last week in a storm ... It has made me very nervous now if the wind is blowing at all when I'm in the garden ...
  18. Completely missed theses Rye ....What tiny steam engines .... What were they used for originally ?
  19. Thanks Dee .... I didn't expect that but it feels sentimental due to the circumstances . She was a lovely sister in law and is missed a lot ....
  20. I remeber you posting this before Rye ... it does seem brutal doesn't it ....
  21. Hopefully Rob will pop in again Fogey and we can try and help ....
  22. Yeah ..You are certainly are hitting the ground running in the Macro section ..... No flies on you eh. !
