Welcome Colin, good to see a few newcomers this week. Off to look at your website now :-)

Lol, I had just read Jason's article before coming on here. This guy is really making a name for himself now and quite rightly so. Not everyone will agree with what he says, I certainly don't agree with everything, but there is something quite likeable about the guy.

Thanks for this, I didn't know..... Not a great user of Facebook any more, in fact I removed my account just before Christmas and set up a new one just to link to photography related sites. I do like it in principle but found that it was getting a bit of an issue with hundreds of new posts a day from people I hardly knew. As a tool though, Facebook can be very useful.

Hello and welcome, most do not bite as far as I can see lol

Welcome Darren, fairly new myself and, as you can see from the comments above, there really is no escape........

It never ceases to amaze me how a virtual handful of people can turn so many into accepting such extremist beliefs and actions. Sadly, it still goes on today and if ever the world forgets what happened in history, it will surely happen again to a much greater scale.

Great choice and a stunning picture, full of atmosphere. Nice one Phil.

I use Yongnuo which I was going to do a write up on now I have experimented with them. I also have one of their flash controllers and flash guns so they do work together well. Also, as I found recently, on the Nikon (my triggers are for Nikon) they have a lead that comes with a trigger pair that plugs into the remote release socket on the camera and then to one of the triggers giving me a wireless shutter release over quite a range. I also use one of the triggers on a screwing type mains flash unit and it works fine by plugging the flash lead into the trigger. I think they are amazing bits of kit. Just under £19 for a pair. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Yongnuo-Wireless-Trigger-Shutter-Release/dp/B00A4X29X4/ref=sr_1_9?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1422120869&sr=1-9&keywords=yongnuo

Welcome Andy, you have come to the right place for friendly and honest advice. Remember though that you should strive to please only one person with your pictures and that is yourself.

Welcome Steve, good to have you here :-)

5 Things We Need to Forget About as Photographers

I am afraid I am a member of the 'Grumpy Old Git' club too......... Although I prefer the 'Pessimist being an optimist with experience' badge instead.

Very striking picture, agree about the 'ghostly' look

Welcome Mark. As a fairly new member myself, I can promise you will find this a great place to be. Grab a chair and join in, look forward to seeing some of your work.

Quite funny that one. I think the police were as scared as them lol

I have been following Jason for a while now. He does get permission where possible to enter buildings. This old hotel is owned by a preservation trust and they handed him the keys for a few days to do these shoots. More interestingly, for me, is that Jason has switched from his top end Nikon gear to Sony mirrorless cameras, A600/A700 I believe. He has shot a professional wedding at Disney USA and a trip to Ethiopia using these compact cameras with amazing results. I think, if I remember correctly, that some of the shots in the hotel above were done on them to.

Great picture, well done Korky

Hi Craig, good to see someone from sunny Peterborough! Which calibration kit did you get?
-
Welcome Nick. Not been here that long myself but rest assured, this is a very friendly and helpful forum. No one bites if you ask what you may think of a silly question (no such thing as a silly question anyway). Looking forward to seeing some of your shots.

Forgot to mention that I do have the 55-200 zoom as well from my D40. I was looking at the prime more as a faster, better quality lens and as a tool to use my brain and feet to compose rather than a twist grip..... If you know what I mean. The more I think about it, the less appeal the 80mm has at the moment as I see that as a more head and shoulders portrait orientated lens. The 50mm seems to fit into the equivalent focal length as the old 35mm film camera days of a 90-100mm for portraits but the 35mm would give me, as near as possible, the old so called 'standard' lens. However, I was never a huge fan of the old 50mm standard but that was pre zoom days, my thinking might be different now. I suppose at some point I will have to go out with the camera and tape it shut at 35mm on the zom and see how it feels lol.
