Carved For Posterity

I found this carved into the trunk of a fallen tree in some woods. I kinda found myself wondering a little about who they were, and when this was carved...

...I just thought that it made for an interesting picture, given the state of the tree and how the bark had grown, but the names and the heart were still there.

Well actually the colours of the wood came out really nicely in the shot. I did bump up the saturation a smidge it's true, but to be honest it looked really lush to start with. The sun had come out by that point and everything just looked crisp and colourful...

 Looking closer, I see the bark is gone from those areas - so possibly dried sap?

I think you are correct Chris as lichen is not a parasite and does not live of the tree itself.
