Loco 1501 Arrives at Bury

So many train shots in this forum :)

'ello Rye! I actually think the apparatus above the train makes this piece. The proportions of the vehicle are spot on. I love the human element - if I could steal your camera and go back in time I'd wait for more people, but this works just fine. Humanity highlights the imposition of the train, I think. Looking forward to seeing more of yours.

Thanks Matt, I take a lot of train photographs. This particular image was taken in Feb this year at a local heritage railway, the UK has many heritage railways (operated as living history to re-create or preserve railway scenes of the past), most were saved by groups of enthusiasts and run as charities. This particular loco is a GWR (Great Western Railway) 1500 class 0-6-0PT shunting engine built in 1949 visiting from the Severn Valley Railway. The apparatus above the train is a gantry used to hold a system of semaphore signals telling the train driver that they to stop, excerise caution or the track ahead is clear.

I'm based in western Canada so sadly I haven't had a lot of exposure to rail systems -  we tend to just drive everywhere. We have one that runs across Canada and I think another that takes us down into the states. I can see the attraction. There's something very romantic about this form of travel.

Yes, I guessed from your location. The UK has an extensive rail network, but we're a small country, heritage railways are completely separate to the National Railway Network, although many are connected to the main rail networks. However all steam engines need a boiler ticket that lasts 10 years, after which the engine needs to be fully stripped down and rebuilt, which is an expensive and time consuming process. In order for steam trains to run on the National Railway Network they need a special 'Mainline Boiler Ticket' which allows them to run. This year I'm going to Scotland to ride on the Jacobite Train, which was made famous in the Harry Potter films.

During the 1960's in the UK many of the least profitable rail lines were closed and a lot were bought by enthusiasts and formed into charities to preserve those lines for the future. Many of the loco's were sold for scrap metal but were bought and restored.

You should check out some of my videos of various steam engines. here »
