The Severn Bore.

I'm having a dig through my archives as I've nothing new right now. Because of the flooding I didn't risk going to see the recent Severn Bore(s) as it would have been risking it a bit.... so here's an oldie.

Is that a tidal current.

Yes Tina!  I took the shot several years ago at Minsterworth SW of Gloucester. There have been some big bores recently magnified by the volume of water flowing down the River Severn, they are rated 1-5* and there's a possible 5* next Sunday. I'm going to see what the weather is doing and the flood situation so no idea whether I will actually go. The bore in the shot is only about a 3*, I've never seen a 5* so I will go if the weather conditions allow.

Here's some info.

It will be interesting to see if you get some shots, but don't put yourself at risk.

Tina... I will only go if I'm certain not to have flooding on route, there are several trouble spots to be checked out in advance. I will go on the Environment Agency website early Sunday morning and check.

Not strictly tidal though in some areas perhaps nearer to the mouth of the river it could be considered tidal but more a kind of funneling effect producing a genuine wave that travels both upland and downland and attracts many tourists at all times of year though when I went there the weather was rather overcast and I never managed to get any decent pictures though it's certainly true that some people have - and did you know that The Severn is England's longest river? some say it's the the Thames but they would be wrong as I've actually measured both rivers from source to mouth and the Severn is definitely longer though if you add in the Thames tributaries perhaps then The Thames could be longer but I'm sticking with The Severn, which if you've never been on the Severn Valley Railway you should as it is Britain's first completed enthusiast railway some people say that's the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway but they would be wrong as I actually worked on the Severn Valley and it got finished a lot earlier than the Keighley railway, but that shouldn't take away from the natural beauty of the Severn which has some really gorgeous places and have you ever been to Kinver Edge? you should you know... Crikey if that is a 3 I dread to think what a 5 would look like. I do feel for the people all around that area at the moment, poor sods have been underwater in some places since before xmas........

The Bore moves quiet fast don't it?

And is'nt there another river that has what is described as a Bore?

I googled it and there are a few rivers in the UK that have a tidal bore...lol. The Severn is the famous one though.

Annie... Didn't you spot the links in my second posting, there are lots of photos in one of them.
