A PAIR OF JACKS

Jack is one of the pleasantist chaps I see on my almost daily round of the town centre, I have posted his portrait previously.....he is a great subject who enjoys receiving prints afterwards:

Here are two versions of the same pic, processed in entirely different ways...........................Do you have a preference ...and why?

i agree with the comments about the mono version and would normally agree, but because of his dark blue jumper it looks to me like his head is floating in blackness, so because of that i prefer the colour version as you can see his shoulders and torso as well

The colour for me - this is a guy whose hair and beard are his dominant character, and the colour shows them off perfectly. On the mono, the hair is too dark and the face too light IMO.

A very interesting response..........personally I prefer the mono image........but .....then again..........I like the colour version, for all the reasons you say.

I am experimenting wildly with my mono processing currently, there is so much that I haven't been doing, so much to learn......getting the balance right between making a Photograph or a Graphic is down a very fine line.

My reasons are, that I never seem to have achieved the lovely velvety black-blacks of some of the best exponents of the....Dark Side.

I was bowled over by the dark room work of Ansell Adams in the YouTube documentary about his life and methods......the way he could, extract tonal values across a scene, just by using chemicals of different strengths, a variety of timings and light values was incredible.

It is all so relatively easy in Photoshop and the other photo software, once all the basics have been learned........just like a new driver, it is all too easy to over compensate, to be clumsy, to overdo things..........I am hoping that perseverance and practice help me to smooth out my new techniques a little.

Please bear with me, through my learning process ......my old brain doesn't function like it used to.....( that's my excuse anyway ;-)
