Arnside Viaduct

I like Arnside, been a few times to watch the Bore..

It's not as spectacular as the Severn bore but it's probably more dangerous. The mudflats in Morecambe Bay are the largest in the UK, get caught out there when this comes in and you are doomed. Cockle picking has now been banned because the loss of life has been so great. Here's a vid someone else posted on Youtube the same day I was there:

The monochrome shots always seem to lend an air of drama to it. Number 1 for me.

I seem to remember when I lived in Devon, that a riding school was crossing Morecombe Bay when the tide came in. A lot of kids and horses drowned. It was a terrible tragedy and you can see why when you see how fast the tide comes in.

I'm in Arnside every day..........it is the name of our house and has been since it was built in 1875 ......for many years I didn't know where Arnside was, then we went on a rail trip to the Lakes and we passed it, my kids were thrilled.

I often wondered why the house was called Arnside, then I saw a photograph of Arnside Castle which looks very similar to our Kenilworth Castle close by. I am guessing that the first owner or builder of the house had connections to the area, or that he/ she saw a similarity, or, travelled on the early steam trains to the Lakes regularly.

Great pics Martyn, I prefer the first one, great to see good mono work.

I can't decide between the two, but then it occurred to me I don't need to!

I just love your stuff, particularly your mono output. The gradation and tones are like smooth butter. Will you be letting me in on your secret?

Cracking images, and a pleasure to be able to enjoy them :)

Wasn't there a big thing about this a few years back - something to do with Chinese labourers drowning while cockling, and it turned out they were employed by shady gangmasters?

Yes, that was at Hest Bank just half a mile along the shore from where I live. Only recently they found what is believed to be the remains of the last victim.

Glad you enjoy my pictures Graham. I just process the image to get the best colour image I can, convert to B&W in Lightroom then play with the colour sliders until I think it looks ok. I joined a specialist B&W forum a while back, and although I got a couple of nice comments, my pictures just don't cut it!

Well for me your monos tick a helluva lot of boxes. I still keep looking at your 'Curves' entry, which I just adore to bits :)

Well I like them both for different reasons. You make some great mono photos that I really like.

I think it's been mentioned before, a small tilt often appears wrong, almost a mistake, so my view is, if you're going to angle the shot, really go for it.

Both nice pictures, Martyn.
