Er well I suppose you just have to take a chance once in a while as I do, feet from the action, the majority of the shots are taken from windows or a distance anyway the photographer isn't taking the risk, the morons on the jetty are

 

10 minutes earlier I was standing where the bonnet is now

 

With the motocross I shoot I am on my stomach 15' away from the bikes coming head on at me

I am 15' in front of the bike on my stomach when I shoot motocross, we all take risks, you just have to weigh them up

But the photographer is not taking the risk shooting the waves, the morons on the jetty are.

With the unpredictable forces of nature, I never take risks - that's what a zoom lens is for They are just crazy, even if they escaped unscathed, how many of their cameras would survive a soaking like that?

Many will do almost anything for a shot. Me? I'm a little more cautious. Stand well back and zoom. If I can be even bothered going out in that kind of weather.

The storm warming in the SW warned of "6 metre waves, or even higher". That one is clearly WAY more than 6 metres. You would think they would at least try to run - they don't even seem to be pointing cameras.  ETA: oh wait, one is.
