before Gormley..

Two versions of a shot of Crosby Beach before Gormley's Iron Men got their rusty little hands on it. It was a hazy summer day, so it was quite misty out to sea. I like the original colour picture, but I wondered how a monochrome treatment in Photoshop would do - quite well, it turns out. (Various adjustment layers - Darken, Lighten, Gradient, and Curves, plus a bit of noise added. Any artefacts are from the scan of a 10x8 print.)

Yes, I KNOW the horizon isn't level! It was more important to me to have the beacon upright as it's the main focal point.

I'm for the colour version as well - it has a nice, peaceful feel about it.

To be honest, I much prefer Crosby Beach post Gormley. For me, the Iron Men are a brilliant piece of art. It's real art that can be enjoyed by real people just by taking a stroll on the beach.

Don't get me wrong - I like the Iron Men too, but this was 1995 in the pre-Gormley era.

I know what you mean about the peacefulness Korky. To be honest, the simple conversion to monochrome was flat and boring, but not having Topaz or Silverlight or any of those wonderful B&W conversion programs, I did think that maybe Photoshop was underrated on that score? So I tried a few Adjustment layers, and used Blending modes almost for the first time in anger (I've always been a bit scared of them before) and they seemed to come up trumps in making the monochrome really 'pop'. Don't you think?
