Hmm, this was taken on the sigma 70-300 on a tripod but still looks 'soft' to me, what am I doing wrong or is it my monitor that gives me the impression that all is not quite right...

It looks OK to me as well. I'm not familiar with Sigma lenses, does yours have IS... if so I expect you know already to turn it off when using a tripod.... not that there's much wrong with this image.

I'm wondering if the focus is on the tail end of the plane which does look sharp and with the lens being full out at F7 the focus is going off towards the front.

 

Having said that I do find above 250mm my 300mm looks a little soft so I simply add sharpening before I convert the raw file.

 

I would also use continuous focus on this kind of shot.

Looks sharp to me, where it should be.

 

What was your original image size?  if larger than is seen here could we see it larger, thanks
