The remains of the day

The beach at the Naze, Walton, Essex last Sunday evening, the people and kids are almost gone. All that is left are the footprints and the forgotten castle.

Just waiting for the sea to wash the setting clean for the next visitors....

It is strange how an apparently simple scene like this can stir memories or feelings?

It looks like the kind of day a majority of folk dream of.....a sandy beach.....blue almost cloudless sky.....three kids playing happily in the sand after a surfeit of ice cream and chips......my bikini clad good lady stretched out fast asleep........then me, the ungrateful hot weather hater, squirming miserably desperate for shade and a doze, but unable to because I need to keep my eyes and ears on the kids as they run to play in the surf.....my eyes really hurt if I even try to read a book......then I notice that my shoulders and nose are beginning to burn.....I know I will be in for a very painful few days.......the sun cream, then, used to be that thick.......gritty-sharp-edged sand would stick like tiny magnets to an already burned skin making it agony to brush off........was it all worth it?.....

....Cos it was.......the kids tired themselves out, good lady tanned and relaxed ( she who NEVER burns) ......me?, burned, ratty, tired, broke.....almost rushing to get to the welcome shade and relative cool of our tent, camper or holiday let, to sleep until tea time.

No wonder, as the kids got older, I took up metal detecting in the cool of dawn or at sunset.....why I always wear a long sleeved shirt, and stay out of the sun as much as possible.......I literally fade during hot and humid weather.......photography has replaced detecting now.

.....Miserable Old Git......'Aint I?
