First DSLR :)

I have just won a used 1000d on ebay body only and a few accessories :)

the guy "says" it's taken less than 50 photo's, bargain (I hope) at £130 :)  now looking for a lens to go with it, thinking 55-200 as an all rounder?

i realise it's the bottom rung of the ladder but I have to start somewhere, I'll be keeping the FZ45 for the zoom range, buying a canon 600mm lens will be mega money

do I need a 50mm?, is it just for BOKEH?   I just started a whole new education for my photography, wish me luck.

no you don't need one and no they are not just for bokeh and whilst I love using my fifity I agree with BP & Phil. I started with a kit lens 18-135 mm and still use it ( the Dakota & Spitfire pictures I posted where both shot using it).

I think your next move depends entirely on what you like to shoot, I went wide with a 10/20mm but Leon as you seem to enjoy motor-sports maybe a longer lens might be a good choice to go for?

cheers Colin for the input, the Bridge will be with me at the next MS event for the action shots, my first trip out (if they arrive in time) will be the butterfly house at Round-hay park in Leeds,

come Xmas the wifey may just treat me to a 70-300 maybe :)

Remember the sensor in this camera is a 1.6x sensor commonly known as a crop sensor

This means a 50mm lens is equivalent to 50 x 1.6 = 80mm lens on a full frame sensor

its handy to know when shooting with a tele photo say 300mm this makes it equivalent to 480mm (ideal for sport)

Down side is a 24mm lens is = to a 38mm

Or in other words when you need a wide angle you have to go wider but when you want a long lens you have a greater reach

All ef /efs lens should fit yours so look in charity shops for older lens, whilst maybe slightly not as good as lens designed for digital they are still very good and above all cheap

ooh it will be here tomorrow!!!

Where can I buy a GENUINE Canon battery at a good price, I don't trust the bay, too many fakes (like my "genuine" Apple charger 2 weeks ago!)

LP-E5 battery Amazon canon £33.31

I am using duracell for my 50d (not same battery but same maker) and it seems good over 250 shots and still going strong showing full charge still

LP-E5 duracell Amazon £12.49 mixed reviews but generally positive

Did buy some cheapo ones £11 for two they last approx 100 shots apiece, use them as last ditch ones

I'm really pleased for you, Mr W.

My sons first DSLR was a Canon which he bought off ebay, and he was impressed with it, but sold it after a while because he didn't have time to use it.
A few months ago he upgraded and went for another Canon when he knew his work was going well.
My first decent film SLR was a Canon and I never had a problem with it.
I hope you will soon be posting some pics that you have shot with it.
You can always start on some scenery and Macro with the lens that you already have.

I bought my genuine Nikon one from Amazon and am really pleased with it. I had bought a rip off one for £10 and it said thet it was for Nikon cameras, including the D3200.

When it arrived it turned out that it wouldn't work in the D3200 at all, and that's why I went to Amazon as it was dispatched from Amazon themselves and I'm sure they would never advertize it as genuine if it wasn't as they would have their good name to protect.

I also bought the camera from there previously.

Many cameras now have rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries (Li-ion batteries) that need special chargers sold with the camera or they could overheat and be damaged if charged incorrectly. We all know the trouble Boeing has had with their Dreamliner batteries:-

http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/five-apps/five-tips-for-extending-lithium-ion-battery-life/289

You may find these useful.

For Nikon:-

http://www.nphotomag.com/2012/11/05/nikon-camera-batteries-the-complete-list-for-every-current-dslr/

Just like Boeing Nikon did have trouble with some of it's Li-ion batteries:-

http://www.electronicsweekly.com/made-by-monkeys/recall-corner/recall-corner-nikon-lithium-io-2012-07/

For Canon:-

http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/article_pages/hardware/canon_battery.html

It is said that Li-ion batteries begin to deteriorate as soon as they are made, that is they have a shelf life, so it's always best to buy from firms with high battery sales to get freshly made ones. Also never buy a spare Li-ion battery for when the first one fails because it will be deteriorating meanwhile. If you regularly use more than one batteries charge per shoot that's OK to buy more than one because you are regularly using both, but not to just leave one lying around unused as a spare until the first fails. Camera manufacturers don't usually make their own batteries anyway, they are made by specialist battery firms for them, just as Boeings were.

I Use a 500D and have Duracell ones in my battery grip - cant fault them.  Cant fault the grip either, but I use a tripod a lot.

Lens wise I do like my 50mm, and my Sigma 10-20 - still use the 17-55 kit lens a lot too.

A circular polariser is quite interesting to use, and I love an ND filter :-)
