A Grand Day Out

Recommended Posts

I thought I would share some of my images from my lovely day out today. I visited Ribblehead Viaduct and for me, it was stunning, absolutely stunning.

Ribblehead Viaduct, or Batty Moss Viaduct, carries the Settle - Carlisle railway. It is a grade II listed structure. The land around it is also protected as it hold the remains of the 'Batty Wife Hole', 'Sebastapol' and 'Belgravia' navvy settlements or 'shanty towns'.  The first stone was laid on 12 October 1870 and the last one in 1874. It is 400M long and 32M high, and 1.5 million bricks were used to construct it.

I am still doing the post processing/picking my favourites but here's one to whet your appetite a little.

It's a few years since I went on  a train on that railway  line ... After driving there especially to photograph this historic edifice.   Somewhere I have a file of photos  but can I find them ... ?  I have a feeling  I forgot to retrieve them from my old desktop before I put it in the loft ... ( just wasn't able to bin it ..)  looking forward to seeing the rest of your collection Chrissy ...

Great set Chrissie. The composition of the first and last images really do it for me.

Not long ago we had a programme on the TV about these railways and the privation that the navvies had to suffer in these isolated places. They were tough buggers! But sadly, very often, short lived.
