the driving skills these people have is amazing, they head into corners at 60MPH facing the wrong way!  it is a very destructive expensive hobby though I agree, most of the cars are 3-500 horse power, a very extreme sport

Extreme speedway in cars 

Although expensive its still a cheap way to race and the skills as Leon says is quite incredible

Your statement  above can be logically applied to all forms of sport the answer is enjoyment
