This is part of the west side defense I am searching to find what type of rock this is and where it came from

is whitby rock not famous? i am sure i saw a programme a few weeks ago on the tv about it. something about it being easy to be conned by imitations ... i need to google it now..!

It's Jurassic mudstone and full of fossils, that's why it's famous.

Whitby Jet

Jet occurs in two forms dubbed hard and soft varieties, with the former most prized for working and found below a thin limestone known as the Top Jet Dogger. Soft jet can be found slightly above the Top Jet Dogger as well as in the deltaic deposits of the Middle Jurassic. Native jet can preserve the texture of the tree from which it came, as well as impressions of other remains on the sea floor such as ammonites.

they make jewelry with it..but i think you need to be sure it's the hard jet that you buy and not the soft jet...

Jet is fossilised monkey tree or as it is known in yorkshire coal
