Compositionally, the second is much better - you've shot too low down in the first and chopped the top off all the masts, while the second 'just works'.

However, I've worked out why I like the light in the first better : in the second you've shot with the light coming from behind to the right, and therefore one or two of boats have burned out highlights and the overall feel is a bit flatter; in the first you've shot almost into the light, with delicious contre-jour highlights on the water, and I'm always a sucker for 'into the light' shots.

Thanks, everyone. They were very quick shots as the first was on the way to catch the little train up the mountain and the second was after we came back down from the station and were making our way back to the main station, to catch the train back to Barmouth.
Had I realized that we would have a two hour wait because we had missed the 6pm train, I would have spent long shooting the harbour.

Thanks for the CC, Chris, I agree with you on the burned out boats on the second one.
I think I will need to re-edit the original as I could see it after I had posted.
