GRANDSON in MONO

Recommended Posts

Whenever our grandchildren visit, I attempt to capture formal portraits amongst the typical family snaps........I don't have a studio or special lighting, but always use what is to hand.

Here, my grandson is standing by a wall cupboard that has a diffused strip-light underneath....I noticed that the soft, rather yellow glow was ideal for this kind of portrait.................he is an excellent model too....very patient.

I did have to adjust the White Balance to suit Flourescent light.....................Shot in RAW through my wide open, SONY 1.8-35:

Converted and then processed in CS3 using layers of subtle contrast Grading and then selective sharpening to add life and texture:

Much to his embarressment we all comment that he looks like the...Oliver Twist....in the old B/W film version?

Thank you all..........I have made a mental note to use this corner of our tiny kitchen again.......that lovely diffused light comes from a 18 inch standard 1980's strip light that has a opaque plastic diffuser to prevent glare.......it is fixed to the underside of a pine wall cupboard made by me.

My grandson was standing in the light chatting, when I suddenly spotted its potential as the ideal shadowless light source, and it worked........now I must persuade my other grandchildren to oblige by standing or sitting in the same place.
