overexposed in the camera and then slid a slider until most of the buildings details had vanished. i seem to remember seeing a painting something like this.

Ido like to see innovative  experiments in photography... Sometimes they nearly work ... Sometimes they really work  and sometimes they don't work at all ....  

For me ... It nearly works ... This time ... But like the thought process  a lot!

Great idea! I'd actually like to see two versions : one with the panorama but much less high key, and then a closer view of one third (one group of people) in the  high key way you've done this.

thanks for the comments. i've looked at a couple of lowry's and it's not his type of painting i based this on. i'll have to keep searching.

it was shot as a jpg and pretty much blitzed by the light. there's not a lot left to play with.

I've seen a picture/painting somewhere where the background was an outline and the foreground was full colour people (unless i dreamt it?).

i thought about trying to recreate it solely in photoshop but my masking skills are woeful and it would take too much time to achieve. so i thought, as a shortcut, i could overexpose in the camera and save a lot of time in ps.

unfortunately my mind is still in 35mm film mode, where i try and get 39 exposures from a roll of 36. consequently i only took 1 picture of this.

i think the problem is balancing the outline of the background with the definition of the people and objects in the foreground.
