Tortuga weekend Whitby

Recommended Posts

A really colourful collection there Fuzzy ... Nicely captured ... looks like  the dressing up in Whitby is taken VERY seriously..... I

I'm just imagining, "oh argh.. me hearties"  in a broad Yorkshire accent!

Of course one of my favourite photographers of the past  lived in Whitby and photographed a lot of the people and the town ... Francis Meadow Sutcliffe ....I have a few of his prints ... Worth a look in my opinion....

F Sutcliffe got into a bit of trouble with the churches for his naked urchin shots

I was looking at one this weekend (sutcliffe print not naked urchin) showing the crowds in the edwardian times on the sands going for boat rides The thing was the sands were where the trawlers tie up now, so they must at some time have dredged the harbour

The pirates were I think from down south (well a lot of them talked with that funny accent they use down there)

pirate (n.) Look up pirate at Dictionary.com
c. 1300 (mid-13c. as a surname), from Latin pirata "sailor, corsair, sea robber" (source of Spanish, Italian pirata, Dutch piraat, German Pirat), literally "one who attacks (ships)," from Greek peirates"brigand, pirate," literally "one who attacks," from peiran "to attack, make a hostile attempt on, try," from peira "trial, an attempt, attack," from PIE root *per- (3) "to try, risk" (cognates: Latin peritus"experienced," periculum "trial, experiment; attempt on or against; enterprise;" see peril). An Old English word for it was sæsceaða. Meaning "one who takes another's work without permission" first recorded 1701; sense of "unlicensed radio broadcaster" is from 1913.
